TALKING LETTERS

Documentary, 53 min, AUT/RO/UA/MDA/LTU, 2013 – Color, Stereo

A film by Angelika Herta and Pavel Braila - A project by Alte Arte Romania; Funded by: Erste Foundation Austria, European Cultural Foundation, Open Society Institute

A multi-faceted portrait of the history and present of the Romani language, which was repeatedly banned and persecuted from Maria Theresa to Hitler. Contemporary witnesses and linguists shed light on a little-known linguistic culture. “Talking Letters” gives an inside in different realities of Romani people who - against every pressure of assimilation - are inventing their own ways of keeping, transmitting and promoting their language.
